Symposiums on Social Capital and Community Engagement
The Interdependence Network, with gracious support from the Milbank Foundation and the Unicorn Children's Foundation is hosting a symposium series across North America. The word symposium is derived from the Greek word sympinein, which means "to drink, or nourish together." Following Ancient Greek tradition, the IN symposiums are unlike other conferences you have attended and will feature a "gathering of good people to debate, plot, boast, or simply reveal" the actions and directions we can take to help people with disabilities build social capital and enhance their engagement in the community.
In 2011, the IN conducted an international study that examined the community engagement patterns of people with disabilities. What we discovered was revealing and embarrassing. More than 70% of people interviewed reported wanting to be more engaged in the community, and the majority of people told us their closest friends were paid staff.
You will walk away from the symposium with a personal blueprint for action in your community.
